BODY: The cat is out of the bag โ or rather, on top of the giant stuffed Moogle. Square Enix has released a new character introduction trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth zooming in on Cait Sith, the fortune-telling, megaphone-wielding mascot who has confounded and charmed players since 1997. The video drops just over two weeks before the game's June 3 launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store on Windows.
The trailer showcases Cait Sith's battle mechanics, including his dice-based attacks and the slot-machine summons that have become series staples. Square Enix also previews the character's role in several of Rebirth's signature minigames, leaning into the carnival-barker energy that has always defined the character. For players coming from the 2024 PS5 release, the multi-platform version preserves the original's sprawling Gold Saucer content while adding platform-specific optimizations.
This rollout marks Square Enix's most aggressive multi-platform push for a mainline Final Fantasy title in years. The Switch 2 version in particular is being closely watched as a bellwether for whether Nintendo's new hardware can handle the company's tentpole RPGs without the compromises that hobbled previous Switch ports. The Xbox release also ends a long drought of mainline FF titles on Microsoft platforms.
Pre-order bonuses and a demo are expected to roll out closer to launch, with additional character spotlights โ likely Vincent and Cid โ anticipated in the coming weeks.
The insider take
In Tokyo, Square Enix's decision to bring Rebirth to Switch 2 and Xbox simultaneously is being read as a quiet admission that PS5 exclusivity didn't pay off the way Sony or Square hoped. Industry chatter at last month's events suggested domestic sales of the original Rebirth fell short of Remake's pace, and the company is now betting that Switch 2's massive installed-base potential โ combined with Xbox's overseas reach โ can recoup the gap. For longtime fans, the bigger story is that Cait Sith, often the most divisive party member among Japanese players, is getting headline treatment ahead of fan favorites like Vincent.
