BODY: The Blue Bomber is charging his Mega Buster again. Capcom has confirmed that Mega Man: Dual Override — known in Japan as Rockman: Dual Override — will launch in 2027 as the 12th entry in the Classic Mega Man series, and the first brand-new mainline installment since 2018's Mega Man 11. In a developer interview, the team framed the project as a title "born anew from the love of both fans and the development staff."
That framing is telling. The Classic series has spent nearly a decade in cold storage while Capcom leaned on remasters, collections, and the Legacy bundles to keep the 8-bit hero visible. Dual Override represents the studio's first real bet that there's still appetite for a fully original Mega Man built from the ground up.
As the "Dual Override" name suggests, the pitch centers on a new mechanic that reworks how Mega Man engages with the series' signature Robot Master gauntlet. The developers spent much of the interview teasing "a wealth of new elements" designed to freshen the run-jump-shoot-and-steal-weapons loop that has defined the franchise since 1987, while promising the tight, deliberate platforming that longtime players expect remains intact.
The 2027 window gives Capcom room to court both nostalgic veterans and a generation that met Mega Man through Legacy Collection rather than the NES. Platform details and the full feature set are still being rolled out.
The insider take
Around Tokyo, the timing reads as deliberate. Capcom has spent the Monster Hunter Wilds era proving it can modernize legacy IP without gutting it, and Mega Man — perpetually beloved, perpetually shelved — is the obvious next candidate. The "fans and developers" language echoes how Capcom rehabilitated Street Fighter after a rocky stretch: lead with community goodwill, then deliver. Domestic observers note the 2027 date also comfortably clears the franchise's 40th anniversary in 2027, making Dual Override less a one-off and more the opening move in a renewed push for the Rockman brand at home and abroad.
