BODY: After almost twenty years, Capcom's blade-clashing samurai saga is back. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches today, September 4, marking the first brand-new mainline entry in the Onimusha series since Dawn of Dreams in 2006.
The game arrives simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Windows (Steam and Epic Games Store). Capcom is offering three tiers: the Standard Edition at ¥8,990, the Deluxe Edition at ¥9,990, and the Premium Deluxe Edition at ¥10,990, with the pricier bundles packing bonus cosmetics and digital extras.
Way of the Sword returns to the series' roots as a hardcore kengeki (sword-combat) action title, trading sprawling movesets for the tense, precise blade duels that made the original 2001 game a PlayStation 2 landmark. Set in a demon-haunted Kyoto during Japan's Sengoku period, the game leans on the franchise's signature blend of historical setting and Genma demon-slaying supernatural horror.
For longtime fans, the revival signals that Capcom is once again willing to bet on one of its dormant heritage franchises, following the successful modern reinventions of Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.
The insider take
From Tokyo, the timing is telling. Capcom has spent the past few years methodically resurrecting its back catalog, and Onimusha's return has been quietly anticipated ever since a Netflix anime adaptation tested the waters in 2023. The series has always been culturally rich material for Japanese players — it draws on Sengoku-era iconography, real historical figures, and the oni folklore embedded in Japanese storytelling. Launching day-and-date on Switch 2 also underscores how central Nintendo's new hardware has become to major third-party releases in Japan, where handheld play still dominates the market. Whether Western audiences embrace the deliberate, punishing swordplay over flashier action fare will be the real test.
