BODY: A flower-crowned alien and his permanently unimpressed friend are about to colonize Japan's drugstore skincare aisle. Utena has confirmed a second collaboration between its botanical toner Magia Botanica Skin Conditioner and Coji-Coji, the surreal manga by the late Sakura Momoko — best known worldwide as the creator of Chibi Maruko-chan.
The limited-edition bottle holds 500mL of toner formulated with adlay (hatomugi) extract and herbal extracts as moisturizing agents, pitched at dryness-related rough skin. The reference price is ¥825 including tax — firmly in impulse-buy territory for a bottle this size.
The packaging art is pure Coji-Coji: the titular alien wears a flower decoration while Jiro, his deadpan classmate, watches with a withering side-eye. It's a gag that lands without any knowledge of the series, which is part of why these collaborations work on a shelf.
Distribution splits in two. Versions bundled with a novelty sticker — featuring Coji-Coji wearing Jiro's headband — go on sale November 16 exclusively at Matsumotokiyoshi Group and Cocokara Fine Group stores. The standard limited packaging rolls out from November 20 at other drugstores and supermarkets nationwide, in staggered waves and limited quantities.
The insider take
Japan's "mega toner" category is a genuinely competitive battlefield, and it's where character IP does its quietest, most effective work. The 500mL hatomugi lotion bottle is a Japanese bathroom fixture — a format popularized by Naturie's Hatomugi Skin Conditioner and now crowded with rivals selling essentially the same promise at essentially the same sub-¥1,000 price. When nobody can win on formula or price, you win on the bottle. Sakura Momoko IP is a particularly sharp choice here: her readers are now in their thirties and forties, exactly the demographic buying skincare in bulk, and Coji-Coji carries a gentler, more design-forward nostalgia than Maruko. Note too the chain exclusivity — Matsukiyo and Cocokara, now under the same parent, routinely secure sticker or novelty variants to pull shoppers through their doors rather than a competitor's. Expect the sticker version to vanish within days of November 16, and to surface on Mercari shortly after.
