BODY: Two and a half years after Dragon's Dogma 2 divided players, Capcom is doing the thing it did with the first game: coming back with a bigger, colder, meaner version. Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen goes on sale today, October 9, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam at ¥5,990 (CERO D, single-player).

Anyone who already owns Dragon's Dogma 2 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Steam doesn't need to buy twice — the new material is sold separately as the Dark Arisen Expansion DLC for ¥2,990. It bundles three distinct additions.

The largest by far is a new story region, 「滅びの王土」 — roughly "the ruined dominion" — set in Norgan, a far-northern territory that once prospered under the kingdom before being abandoned to the ice. Blizzards, hostile tribes and monsters beyond human reckoning fill the tundra, and survivors walk away with 遺戦品: war relics whose real stats stay hidden until you haul them back to base and have them appraised. That's a deliberate hack-and-slash loop grafted onto Dogma's open world, and it comes with a new companion, a dragon-hunter named Eir, chasing the mystery of an undead wyrm that refuses to die.

Second is 「忘れられた試儀」, a set of 12 varied dungeons scattered through the base game's map, each guarded by trials from the Guide and each hiding rare equipment once wielded by Arisen of ages past. Third, more modest: new hairstyles and tattoo options in character creation, for both the Arisen and their pawns. Capcom is also expanding its "Official Pawns" roster with characters built by comedians, pro athletes, streamers and video creators worldwide, borrowable in-game as support pawns.

The insider take

The name is the message. Dark Arisen was the 2013 expansion that rehabilitated the original Dragon's Dogma in Japanese players' eyes, and reusing it here is Capcom admitting the 2024 launch needed rehabilitating too — PC performance complaints, the microtransaction storm, the fast-travel arguments. In Japanese interviews, the team has been unusually candid that tens of thousands of fan letters pushed this project forward, and that some appraised relics are flat-out "broken" in the players' sense of the word. The Switch 2 release matters locally as well: on a platform where Japanese households buy far more software per console than they do on PS5, this is the first time Dogma's full open world has been within reach of that audience, early-purchase Norgan outfit code and all.
