BODY: The wait for one of Japan's most beloved RPG sagas to return in modernized form just got a little easier. On May 14, Nihon Falcom updated the official site for Trails in the Sky the 2nd (Sora no Kiseki the 2nd), serving up a hefty batch of new details on combat systems and the shadowy antagonists fans have been waiting two decades to see rebuilt in 3D.
Scheduled for a simultaneous release on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and Steam on September 17, the title is a full remake of 2006's The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC โ long considered by Japanese fans to be the emotional high point of the entire Kiseki franchise. It follows last year's well-received remake of the first game.
The update spotlights returning protagonists Estelle and Joshua Bright alongside refreshed looks at the Enforcers of the secret society Ouroboros (่บซๅฐใใ่, literally "the self-devouring serpent"). Each Enforcer is ranked by number and wields a signature combat style, and the new character art suggests Falcom is leaning harder into the menace and theatricality that defined the original PSP-era release.
Falcom also teased refinements to the orbment-based magic system and chain-craft attacks, though full mechanical breakdowns are being held back for closer to launch. A new trailer is expected at this summer's Japanese gaming showcases.
The insider take
In Japan, Sora no Kiseki SC occupies near-sacred territory โ it's the game most older Falcom fans cite when arguing the series peaked before its Erebonia arc ballooned in scope. There's quiet anxiety in Akihabara and on Japanese forums about whether the remake's voice cast and pacing can match the original's emotional weight, particularly the famous finale. That Falcom is releasing on Switch 2 day-one signals confidence: Nintendo's new hardware is expected to dominate Japanese RPG sales through 2027, and Falcom rarely bets wrong on its home market.
