BODY: The loudest cheer at Makuhari Messe on Saturday wasn't for a boss or a city — it was for a bird.
Square Enix used the opening keynote of FINAL FANTASY XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo on October 31 to reveal Zephyr, the second new job coming in FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold (known in Japan as Hakugin no Wanderer). Zephyr is a physical ranged DPS that fights with a crossbow in one hand and an arcane bird of prey — a Nephele — circling overhead, chaining coordinated strikes with its familiar while feeding buffs to the party.
The Nephele isn't just a damage pet. Square Enix says the familiar doubles as a means of travel, positioning Zephyr as one of the most mobile jobs in the game, with evasion and repositioning baked into its kit. Lore-wise, the job traces back to hunters in the northwestern mountains of Ilsabard, who survived harsh wilderness by pairing bolts with talons.
Practical details: Zephyr starts at level 90, with its unlock questline beginning in Gridania, and — like the gunshield-and-greatshield tank Bastion revealed earlier — it is playable only in Evolved Mode, the overhauled battle system that leans harder into job identity. Evercold raises the level cap from 100 to 110.
The expansion itself now launches February 23, 2027, with early access from February 19 for pre-order customers; pre-orders open November 4. That's a slip from the originally planned January window, which producer Naoki Yoshida addressed directly on stage: the delay exists "to make sure we can deliver on the many promises we've made." It ships on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Windows, Mac and Steam.
The insider take
Two things register differently from inside Japan. First, the title: Hakugin no Wanderer and Evercold aren't translations of each other at all — FFXIV's JP and EN subtitles have been quietly diverging since Stormblood, and the Japanese community treats the mismatch as a running in-joke rather than a localization failure. Second, physical ranged is the role Japanese static groups perennially struggle to fill; Bard, Machinist and Dancer are chronically under-played in the JP data centers, and a pet-based phys ranged job — the first since Summoner's lineage — is a transparent bid to make that slot desirable again. Expect Nephele plushies at Square Enix Cafe in Shinjuku well before February.
