BODY: You will be handed a bag. It belonged to a woman named Edda. What happens after you open it is, officially, not Square Enix's problem.
On October 5, Japanese ARG collective Daiyon Kyokai ("The Fourth Boundary") announced "Edda's Bag" (エッダの鞄), a collaboration with Final Fantasy XIV that will run as a live experience at FINAL FANTASY XIV Fan Festival 2026 in TOKYO, held October 31 and November 1 at Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Halls 1–7.
The studio describes it as a shuyū-gata nichijō shinshoku game — a "roaming daily-life invasion game." Participants receive a physical prop bag, then move around the real convention floor solving a case via smartphone, with the fiction deliberately bleeding into the space around them. The announcement carries an unusually blunt warning: there is a possibility that danger extends to you personally. Square Enix also flags that the horror intensity is on par with Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard) and its associated questline — the dungeon where Edda Pureheart, a grieving adventurer who lost her fiancé, returns as something considerably worse.
Tickets are sold separately from Fan Fest attendance: ¥4,400 for the standard experience, ¥11,000 for a party ticket, available in advance or on-site at the venue.
The insider take
Daiyon Kyokai is not a marketing agency doing a stunt — it's one of the most quietly influential creative outfits in Japan right now, launched in 2024 and overseen by Jin Fujisawa, the scenario writer and director behind Dragon Quest IX and Dragon Quest X. Their signature "someone else's property" line — Hito no Saifu (Someone's Wallet), Someone's Pay Slip, a product that is literally a stranger's apartment key — sells out on release and has made physical-object mysteries a genuine retail category here, stocked next to stationery in Loft and Tsutaya. So "Edda's Bag" slots perfectly into that format: Edda is FFXIV's most famous tragic obsessive, and her luggage is exactly the kind of object this studio builds a crime scene around. For an ex-Dragon Quest director to be running horror ARGs inside Square Enix's biggest FFXIV event is one of those small, very Japanese industry loops worth noticing.
