BODY: The day after Square Enix ships its first HD-2D Final Fantasy, the campaign moves somewhere unexpected: the bookshop.

Japanese book distributor Nippan (Nippon Shuppan Hanbai) is running a Final Fantasy Resonance tie-in at roughly 350 bookstores nationwide starting October 23, 2026. Spend ¥1,000 or more on anything the store sells — books, stationery, games, general goods — show the campaign image or ask at the register, and you get one of eight original bookmarks at random. There's no cap per transaction, so ¥3,000 means three bookmarks.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22 on PS5, Switch 2, Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with the Steam version a day behind on the 23rd. It's the series' first outing in Square Enix's HD-2D style, the pixel-art-plus-diorama look built for Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest III remake. The story follows protagonist Rain defending eight crystals from an armored figure named Belias — a deliberately classical setup for a deliberately retro-flavored presentation.

The bookstore push doesn't stop at freebies. Nippan is also staging a developer event at Shosen Book Tower near Akihabara Station in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, with producer Keisuke Nakajima appearing, plus an X hashtag campaign running alongside.

The insider take

To outsiders this looks like a strange pairing; in Japan it's shrewd. Nippan is one of the two giants of Japanese book distribution, and the industry it serves has been shrinking for three decades — well over a quarter of Japan's municipalities now have no bookstore at all. Surviving shops stay alive by selling everything but books: character goods, trading cards, stationery, and increasingly games. A ¥1,000 threshold that counts any purchase is the tell — Nippan isn't selling the game here, it's using Square Enix's launch to pull foot traffic through 350 struggling storefronts. The shiori bookmark is also the perfect novelty for this: cheap to print, collectible in sets of eight, and flat enough that the HD-2D sprite work reads beautifully. Expect all eight on Mercari by nightfall.
