BODY: Square Enix just made it a whole lot easier to jump into one of 2024's biggest RPGs on new hardware. A free demo for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, the publisher announced on April 28.
The demo offers a generous slice of the game's opening hours, giving players a real taste of the action-RPG combat and open-world exploration that defined the PS5 original. Notably, save data from the demo carries over to the full version, so nothing played is wasted. On top of that, players who complete the demo will receive in-game bonus items when they purchase the full release.
The multi-platform launch marks a significant expansion for Rebirth, which debuted as a PS5 exclusive in February 2024. The Switch 2 version is particularly notable as a technical showcase for Nintendo's new hardware, demonstrating that the console can handle one of the most visually ambitious JRPGs of recent years. The Xbox and Windows releases also bring the game to an audience that had been waiting over a year for access.
Square Enix has been increasingly aggressive with demos for its flagship titles, and this release follows a proven playbook โ let players invest time, carry progress forward, and sweeten the deal with extras. It's a strategy that paid off handsomely with the original Final Fantasy VII Remake.
The insider take
The simultaneous Switch 2 and Xbox demo launch signals that Square Enix's "multi-platform first" strategy, announced during its business restructuring, is now fully operational. In Tokyo gaming circles, the conversation has shifted from whether Square Enix titles will go multi-platform to how quickly they can get there. Offering a free demo on day one across all platforms โ rather than a timed exclusive window โ suggests the publisher is done leaving money on the table.
