BODY: The mythic cousin of Sucker Punch's samurai epic is taking its time. The anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, once slated for 2027, will now premiere on Crunchyroll in 2028 โ a full year later than announced, Aniplex and Crunchyroll confirmed this week.
The delay arrived bundled with casting news rather than an apology. Mayumi Saco and Shinya Fukumatsu have joined the show in undisclosed roles. Saco is a returning voice from the source material, having played Tomoe in the original game's Legends mode, while Fukumatsu is best known to overseas audiences as Bomb in One-Punch Man. Neither role has been detailed, which suggests the production is still holding back at least part of its lineup.
The creative team remains unchanged and remains formidable. Takanobu Mizuno is directing at Kamikaze Douga โ the studio behind Batman Ninja and a long run of stylized JoJo's Bizarre Adventure openings โ with Gen Urobuchi handling story composition and co-writing the script alongside Renji Oki. Urobuchi's name alone sets expectations high, and dark, for anyone who remembers Puella Magi Madoka Magica or Psycho-Pass.
Newly announced staff fill out the technical side: Keiji Inai on music, Yoshikazu Iwanami as sound director, Yasumasa Koyama as sound editor, and calligrapher Gyousyou Suzuki providing the title lettering. The series is produced by HAYATE in collaboration with Aniplex and PlayStation Productions, with Sony Music on board as music and soundtrack partner.
The insider take
From Tokyo, a one-year slip on a project like this reads less like trouble than arithmetic. Kamikaze Douga's CG-forward style is slow, hand-tuned work, and the studio has a modest pipeline relative to the ambition here โ a Legends adaptation means supernatural combat choreography in nearly every episode. Add Urobuchi, a writer who has never been rushed successfully, and a production committee that includes both Aniplex and Sony's PlayStation arm, and you have a schedule that was always going to be negotiated rather than declared. The telling detail is that staff announcements kept coming: a troubled production goes quiet, while this one is still hiring.
