Hands-On: 'Attack on Titan 3' Makes Flying Effortless — The Titans, Less So

BODY: The single hardest thing about any Attack on Titan game has always been the gear. Hooking, swinging, and landing a blade on a nape moving at speed is a lot of inputs happening at once. At Tokyo Game Show 2026, Koei Tecmo's playable build of Attack on Titan 3 suggests the studio has finally solved it — without making the game a walkover.

The omni-directional mobility device has been streamlined considerably. Holding L2 keeps you airborne in continuous flight rather than demanding constant re-anchoring, and the circle button triggers boost moves for high-speed traversal and sliding attacks. The result is that traversal feels like a thing you do rather than a thing you fight. For players who still struggle with precision, an R2 slow-motion targeting mode lets you line up a specific weak point without panic-swinging.

Combat has picked up new layers too. "Buddy arts" let you chain cooperative attacks with canon characters — Levi being the obvious showpiece — while filling a gauge unlocks "combat arts," flashier techniques that mirror the anime's choreography. Players again create an original character who joins the Survey Corps alongside Levi, Hange and Eren, and Koei Tecmo says the full story is covered this time.

The 15-minute demo dropped players into a forest pursuit of Zeke with Levi in tow, recreating the scene the Japanese coverage led with: Zeke's infamous flailing outburst as things go very badly for him. Even with the friendlier controls, the enemies demand pattern-reading. This is not a game that flies itself.

Attack on Titan 3 launches December 10, 2026 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, priced at ¥9,680 standard and ¥16,830 for the Treasure Box edition.

The insider take

Koei Tecmo has a well-worn Japanese playbook here: take a beloved license, iterate the traversal until it stops being a barrier, then sell the fantasy of being Levi rather than merely controlling him. The 2016 and 2018 entries were respected but famously demanding, and the domestic fanbase skews far beyond the action-game hardcore — plenty of buyers come from the manga side. Smoothing the gear and adding slow-motion assists reads as a deliberate widening of the tent, timed to a franchise that has stayed culturally central in Japan even after the anime wrapped.
