BODY: One of Japan's most enduring comic institutions is roaring back to the screen. A special livestream on Saturday confirmed that Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo — known to millions simply as KochiKame — is getting a brand-new television anime, set to premiere on Fuji TV in 2027.
Based on Osamu Akimoto's manga, the series is a comedy landmark. The original ran in Weekly Shonen Jump for a staggering 40 years, from 1976 to 2016, chronicling the chaotic misadventures of hot-headed, money-obsessed patrolman Kankichi Ryotsu at a police box in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward.
The livestream unveiled the main cast, key staff, a new key visual, and a character promotional video. Fukushi Ochiai (Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash) takes on the iconic role of Ryotsu, while Shouta Aoi (My Next Life as a Villainess) voices the wealthy, refined officer Keiichi Nakagawa. The casting signals a full modern reboot rather than a revival of the long-running 1996–2004 anime.
For longtime fans, the 2027 debut window and Fuji TV home carry weight — the network has deep ties to the franchise's earlier broadcasts, and a fresh voice cast suggests the production is aiming squarely at a new generation of viewers.
The insider take
From Tokyo, the timing feels deliberate. KochiKame is practically a civic icon here — a life-size Ryotsu statue still greets visitors outside Kameari Station, and the ward leans hard into the connection. Reviving the property for 2027 with a young cast reads as an attempt to reintroduce a Showa-and-Heisei-era comedy to Reiwa audiences who may know the name but never watched the original run. The challenge will be tone: KochiKame's humor was rooted in its era, and how the new team modernizes Ryotsu's schemes without sanding off the character's rough charm is the question every fan in Katsushika will be asking.
