BODY: Buy three bags of candy at a Lawson in Japan this month and you might walk out with Link. Starting today, November 3, the convenience store chain has gone full Hyrule in a tie-up with the Nintendo Switch 2 release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — and the rarest items will be gone before most tourists finish breakfast.
The headline giveaway is a set of eight original clear files drawing on classic Ocarina of Time artwork. Buy three qualifying confectionery items during the campaign period and you get one file, first-come first-served — one per visit, up to eight per person. The catch is in the fine print: each store receives just 24 sheets per design, so the popular characters evaporate on day one at high-traffic branches.
Running alongside it is a lottery for players who buy the Ocarina of Time download card at Lawson and register on a dedicated campaign site. One hundred winners receive the "Huzzle The Legend of Zelda Premium Gold Edition" — a metal cast puzzle from Hanayama's long-running brainteaser line, finished in gold and not sold in this form at retail.
Lawson is also turning one branch into a destination. The Lawson Akiba Tolim store in Akihabara carries special Zelda decoration from 7:00 a.m. on November 3 until 8:00 p.m. on November 16. Select stores additionally stock Zelda-themed goods including a weapon-and-shield collectible figure series, a Heart Container interior light, and a Rupee silicone pouch. A separate Ichiban Kuji prize-draw series, "Ichiban Kuji The Legend of Zelda Hyrule Collection," follows from December 5 at 790 yen per draw.
The insider take
Clear files look like throwaway stationery to outsiders, but in Japan they are the base currency of fandom — cheap, flat, mailable, and endlessly tradeable on Mercari within hours of release. The "24 per design per store" number is the real story here: it is small enough to guarantee sellouts, which is exactly the point. Konbini tie-ups like this function less as merchandise sales than as a two-week word-of-mouth engine, and Lawson has refined the formula over years of Pokémon and Evangelion collaborations. If you want a specific design, go on the morning of day one, go to a quieter suburban branch rather than Akihabara, and bring cash.
