BODY: Five years after MELTY BLOOD: TYPE LUMINA pulled TYPE-MOON's cult fighting series back into the mainstream, Aniplex has finally put a date on the follow-up. MELTY BLOOD: TWI-LUMINA arrives April 22, 2027, and it brings one of the fanbase's most requested faces with it.
The 2D fighter launches simultaneously on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC. Pricing has not been announced. That platform list is worth a second look: Aniplex is supporting both Switch generations and holding onto last-gen hardware rather than cutting it loose, a distribution strategy aimed squarely at keeping the competitive player base on a single build instead of splintering it across versions.
The headline addition is White Len (白レン, Shiro Len) — the pale-haired counterpart to Len, originally a Melty Blood series original who debuted in the Act Cadenza era and has been absent since the TYPE LUMINA reboot. Her return signals that TWI-LUMINA is reaching back into the older Melty Blood catalogue rather than restricting itself to the cast of the Tsukihime remake, a point of ongoing anxiety among longtime players.
The distant release window is unusual for a fighting game reveal. A roughly 19-month runway gives developer-side room for the location tests and closed betas that Japanese fighters increasingly rely on, and it hands Aniplex a long promotional tail through two full event cycles of Tokyo Game Show and EVO Japan.
The insider take
Melty Blood's cultural position in Japan is genuinely strange, and it explains the patience here. The series began as a doujin project — French-Bread's circle work built on TYPE-MOON's Tsukihime — and grew into an arcade mainstay played seriously in Akihabara and Nipponbashi game centers for the better part of a decade. That history means the Japanese player base treats each entry as a continuation of a scene, not a product launch, and they are unforgiving about netcode and balance. TYPE LUMINA's strong opening in 2021 came partly because it shipped with rollback from day one. Aniplex dating TWI-LUMINA this far out reads less like a marketing flex than an acknowledgment that this audience will notice every corner cut.
