BODY: A moss-covered rodent may be the most-screenshotted thing to come out of Capcom's Tokyo Game Show stage this year.
During a special stage presentation at TGS 2026 on September 19, Capcom revealed previously unseen areas of Kumoi no Isekigun โ the "Cloud-Dwelling Ruins," the new field arriving in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the massive paid expansion due in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
Crucially, the footage wasn't from the TGS demo build that attendees were queueing for on the show floor. Capcom ran live gameplay from an internal development build, which let the team walk viewers through corners of the map no one outside the studio had seen. Pricing for the expansion remains unannounced.
Two new creatures made their debut in the segment. Komarimotto is a new piece of endemic life โ the non-hostile wildlife that populates Wilds' biomes โ whose name fuses marimo, Japan's beloved spherical lake moss balls, with marmot. Mienmao is a new small monster, its name carrying a distinctly Chinese-inflected ring that suits the ruins' architecture. Both leaned hard into cute rather than menacing, and Japanese social feeds responded accordingly.
The reveals land in an already busy run-up. Ascendance has been drip-feeding monsters since the September 3 State of Play, which confirmed new elder dragon Gundraja and the return of Lao-Shan Lung, with Teostra and Khezu also confirmed for the roster.
The insider take
Capcom knows exactly what it's doing with endemic life. In Japan, these little creatures aren't garnish โ they're a merchandising engine, feeding gashapon capsules, plush lines and Capcom Store exclusives that outlive any given monster's meta relevance. Revealing Komarimotto on a TGS stage rather than in a trailer is a deliberate choice: stage segments generate clip-able moments for Japanese X and Bluesky, where cute beats fearsome every time. It also softened a rough show โ TGS 2026's fifth day on September 21 was cancelled outright due to an approaching typhoon, and Capcom's Saturday stage ended up carrying more weight than planned.
