BODY: Square Enix's signature HD-2D look — the gorgeous fusion of pixel sprites and modern lighting that powered Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest III remake — has always belonged to turn-based RPGs. That changes today.
The Thousand-Year Tale of Adventurer Elliot arrives June 18 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows, marking the first-ever fully original action RPG built in the HD-2D style. After years of remakes and turn-based entries, the studio is finally putting the technique behind real-time combat and exploration.
The standard edition runs ¥7,480, while the Digital Deluxe Edition costs ¥8,580 and bundles the base game with a Digital Deluxe Pack of extras. Steam players will have to wait one extra day — that version launches June 19.
Crucially for the curious, a demo is already available, and your save data carries over into the full release. That lowers the risk for anyone on the fence: you can sample Elliot's adventure now and pick up exactly where you left off after buying in, a smart hook for a brand-new IP without an established fanbase.
The insider take
HD-2D has quietly become Square Enix's most bankable visual brand here in Japan, but every major release so far has leaned on nostalgia or turn-based comfort. Launching Elliot as an action RPG — and on Switch 2 day-and-date, no less — signals the company sees the art style as a platform, not a gimmick. The carry-over demo is the tell: Square Enix is treating this original property like a long-term bet, using the trial to build word-of-mouth in a crowded summer release window rather than relying on a known name. If it lands, expect HD-2D action to become a recurring fixture rather than a one-off experiment.
