BODY: Joe Musashi is sharpening his blade for a new platform. On June 19, Sega announced that its critically praised side-scrolling action game Shinobi: Art of Vengeance (known in Japan as Shinobi: Fukushū no Zangeki) is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24.
Developed by Lizardcube — the French studio behind the gorgeous Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap remake and Streets of Rage 4 — the game revived Sega's dormant ninja franchise with hand-drawn animation and a fluid, combo-driven combat system. Since its original 2025 launch across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the original Switch, it has earned strong reviews for its satisfying, momentum-heavy action.
The headline upgrade for the Switch 2 version is visual fidelity. Sega promises improved image quality that takes advantage of the new hardware's beefier specs, giving Lizardcube's lavish art a crisper presentation on both handheld and docked play. The studio's painterly backgrounds and Musashi's acrobatic ninjutsu should benefit noticeably from the extra horsepower.
Crucially for existing players, save data from the original Switch release can be carried over to the Switch 2 edition. That means anyone partway through their quest for vengeance won't have to start from scratch — a welcome courtesy as the broader library of Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrades continues to grow.
The insider take
From Tokyo, this fits a clear pattern in how Japanese publishers are treating the Switch 2 transition. Rather than full-price relaunches, Sega is positioning enhanced editions with save continuity as a low-friction bridge — a strategy meant to keep goodwill with the dedicated action-game crowd that championed Shinobi's return. It also signals Sega's continued confidence in the franchise's revival; greenlighting a polished port less than a year after launch suggests the company sees long-tail value in Joe Musashi, and possibly a foundation for more Lizardcube collaborations down the line.
