BODY: One of the biggest indie co-op hits of the past year has come to consoles without any warning. On September 17, Shape of Dreams was released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, and a major content update arrived the same day.
Korean studio Lizard Smoothie developed Shape of Dreams and NEOWIZ publishes it. The game first launched on Steam on September 11, 2025. It mixes action roguelite runs with MOBA-style play: you pick a hero, build a set of abilities and fight through runs with up to four players online. The game is also on the Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass, and it now has crossplay across all platforms. PC players can team up with friends on PS5, Xbox or Switch 2.
The update's biggest addition is a new playable character, Ketus, an "Enforcer of Frost." Ketus uses ice to slow and hold enemies in place and gives shields to themself and their teammates. That kit lets Ketus fight on the front line or play support. The update also adds a new boss, new endings and a system that randomizes boss behavior, so fights you've learned by heart can play out differently on each run. Each character's mastery system has also been expanded. Playing a hero now unlocks their backstory and new emotes.
Sales have been strong. The game sold 500,000 copies on Steam in its first two weeks, and total sales had passed 1.5 million by September 10. Around 16,000 Steam reviews give it a "Very Positive" rating, with 89% positive. The developers say players have spent a combined 388 years in the game and defeated 950 million monsters.
The insider take
AUTOMATON calls the release ikinari, meaning "suddenly," and Japanese players have been seeing more of these shadow-drops. They work well when a game already has buzz on PC. The Switch 2 version will matter most in Japan, where console and handheld players far outnumber PC players and many people play with friends on Nintendo hardware. Korean studios like NEOWIZ have been building a bigger audience in Japan in recent years, and crossplay makes it easy for Japanese Steam players to bring their console friends into the game. If the Switch 2 version runs well, this could be one of the most-played co-op games in Japan this autumn.
