BODY: Six days. That's roughly how long it took shoppers to clear out Shimamura's Dragon Quest collaboration online — and the stock in question wasn't even due to ship until February 2027.
Shimamura, the mass-market Japanese fashion chain, launched its collaboration with Square Enix's Dragon Quest series on October 8 across physical stores and its online shop. The made-to-order allocation listed for shipment in early-to-late February 2027 either sold out entirely or dropped to "only a few left" almost immediately. On October 13 the company apologized to customers who missed out and confirmed what it had flagged as a possibility from the start: a second production run, with a later delivery window.
Six items are back on the table — the die-cut drawstring pouch, the gamaguchi clasp coin case, the corduroy tote bag, the insulated lunch bag, the ID card case, and the Shopping Bag L. All carry Dragon Quest branding under the Armor Project / Bird Studio / Square Enix license.
The order window is tight: 10:00am on Wednesday, October 14 through 11:00pm on Sunday, October 18, Japan time, via Shimamura's online store. Buyers should note the shipping date has moved — this batch is scheduled for early-to-late April 2027, two months behind the original allocation. Shimamura is explicitly warning customers not to assume the earlier timeline.
The insider take
Two things make this story read differently from Tokyo. First, Shimamura is not a specialty hobby retailer — it's the chain Japanese families visit for cheap basics, with well over a thousand locations and a devoted following that coined the verb shimapato, "Shimamura patrolling," for circuiting stores hunting limited drops. When Shimamura lands a character license, the audience is enormous and price-sensitive, which is exactly why these goods evaporate. Second, the six-month-out, order-first-build-later model is now standard practice for Japanese apparel collabs: it removes inventory risk for the retailer and kills resale scalping, but it asks buyers to commit money in autumn for a tote bag arriving in spring. Dragon Quest fans, trained by decades of lottery-based merch and first-day queues, generally say yes.
