BODY: Bullet-hell fans, clear your schedule. THQ Nordic Japan and developer TATSUJIN Co., Ltd. have released a free demo of TATSUJIN EXTREME, giving players an early taste of the first mainline entry in the storied arcade shooter series in nearly four decades. The full game launches July 30, 2026.
Known outside Japan as the Truxton franchise, TATSUJIN traces its roots to Toaplan's late-1980s arcade heyday, when tight scoring, relentless enemy waves, and unforgiving difficulty defined the vertical shooting genre. This new installment—arriving 37 years after the original—aims to honor that legacy while modernizing it for current hardware.
The demo, live now, includes multiple modes to sample: a TUTORIAL for newcomers, a HEART STARTER warm-up, a narrative STORY mode, and a cooperative TEAM mode. TATSUJIN EXTREME will ship across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The standard edition is priced at ¥4,950 on PS5 and ¥5,940 on Switch 2, with a premium edition also available.
To build hype, the publisher has also released a behind-the-scenes making-of video. Beyond the digital rollout, a hands-on live event is set for August 2, 2026, at BEEP Akihabara, where fans can play new builds and attend an autograph session with series artist Junya Inoue (井上淳哉), the manga creator whose distinctive art has helped define the modern TATSUJIN look.
The insider take
For Tokyo's arcade faithful, this is a genuine event. The shoot-'em-up (or "STG," as it's abbreviated here) remains a beloved but niche genre, kept alive by dedicated players in spots like Akihabara's Hey and Mikado arcades. That the revival team chose BEEP Akihabara—a cult haunt for retro-hardware collectors—for its launch event speaks volumes: this is a release aimed squarely at the connoisseurs who never stopped chasing the high score. Inoue's involvement lends the project real credibility with the doujin and manga crowd, a savvy bridge between old-school arcade prestige and today's fanbase.
