BODY: When one of the sneaker world's most recognizable tastemakers gets his hands on Pikachu, you know the result won't be ordinary — and it isn't. Pokémon Center is bringing designer Sean Wotherspoon's signature aesthetic to a new line of collaboration plushies, with pre-orders opening at 10 a.m. on July 23.
Wotherspoon is best known for the wildly popular Nike Air Max 1/97 "Sean Wotherspoon" sneaker, a multicolor corduroy classic that turned him into a household name among streetwear collectors. That same rainbow-corduroy DNA is expected to carry over into the Pokémon plush collaboration, giving familiar creatures a texture and palette pulled straight from his vintage-inspired world.
The plushies will be sold through Pokémon Center Online, Japan's official mail-order hub for Pokémon merchandise. Each figure is priced at 7,700 yen (roughly $50), placing the line in premium-collectible territory rather than everyday plush pricing — fitting for a designer whose original sneakers now resell for thousands.
To mark the launch, Pokémon Center is holding a special product-reveal event where Wotherspoon himself will appear on stage alongside Pikachu. Fans won't be able to simply buy their way in: attendance is handled by lottery, making a seat at the reveal one of the most coveted parts of the entire collaboration.
The insider take
Fashion-tie collaborations have become a quiet powerhouse for the Pokémon brand in Japan, but bringing in a Western sneaker designer like Wotherspoon signals a bid for global streetwear credibility rather than domestic nostalgia. Expect resale prices to spike immediately — Tokyo's collector scene treats limited Pokémon Center drops like sneaker releases, complete with dawn queues and instant flips on Mercari. The 7,700-yen tag will feel like a bargain once these hit the secondary market.
