BODY: Thirty-five years after a blue hedgehog first sped across Mega Drive screens, Sonic is getting a monument worthy of his speed โ and his attitude. SEGA has announced that a life-size "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DNA FIGURE" will go on limited-time display at SEGA STORE TOKYO, on the 6th floor of Shibuya PARCO, starting June 23.
The figure is part of SEGA's sprawling "Sonic the Hedgehog 35th" project, a year-long celebration of the franchise's anniversary. The "DNA" branding nods to the character's core design DNA โ the spikes, the red shoes, the cocky grin โ rendered here at full human scale rather than the palm-sized statuettes most fans are used to.
For Sonic devotees, the timing is significant. The mascot's 30th anniversary in 2021 leaned heavily on nostalgia and remasters; the 35th arrives with Sonic riding a genuine cultural high, buoyed by a hit film trilogy and a steady stream of new games. A photogenic, life-size centerpiece in one of Tokyo's busiest fashion districts is squarely aimed at the social-media generation now discovering the series.
SEGA STORE TOKYO has become the company's flagship retail showcase since opening in Shibuya PARCO, regularly hosting Sonic, Persona, and other franchise pop-ups. Expect the display to draw queues โ and plenty of phone cameras โ during its limited run.
The insider take
Shibuya PARCO is no accident as a venue. The building is Tokyo's de facto temple of game and anime culture retail โ its upper floors house the flagship Nintendo and Pokรฉmon stores alongside SEGA's โ so foot traffic skews exactly toward the fans SEGA wants. Placing a life-size Sonic here, steps from Shibuya's scramble crossing, turns the anniversary into free word-of-mouth. Locals know these PARCO displays rotate fast, so "ๆ้้ๅฎ" (limited time) is meant literally: if you want the photo, don't wait.
