BODY: A chocolate-sauce tail curls across the whipped cream, two red hearts stand in for the cheeks, and the drink fades from honey-yellow to espresso brown — Pikachu, rendered in a cup. On Sept. 30, Starbucks Coffee Japan launches "Pokémon and Coffee Adventure Journey," and GAME Watch got an early taste of its centerpiece, the Pikachu Honey Cream Latte.
The drink isn't a marketing-department invention. It came out of an internal barista competition with more than 700 submissions, and the winning recipe belongs to Junko Nitta of the Koriyama Asaka store in Fukushima Prefecture. Her pitch leaned on a single ingredient: honey, which she described as yellow, sparkling and nutritious — a match for what she called Pikachu's bright, cute and positive image. She paired the concept with the series' most famous battle line, kouka wa batsugun ("it's super effective").
In the cup, it's an espresso base under honey-flavored whipped cream, with a caramel note that softens the whole thing into something children can drink. GAME Watch's taster found the honey's gentle sweetness held the caramel and the espresso's light bitterness in balance, and concluded it earns its win on flavor rather than looks alone. Starbucks is suggesting two customizations: almond milk to push the nuttiness forward, or extra espresso shots for adults who want the bitterness back.
Merchandise arrives the same day, including a broad lineup going up on the official online store alongside in-café sales.
The insider take
Starbucks Japan runs seasonal promotions constantly, but full character collaborations are rare — the chain guards its brand tone closely, and Pokémon is one of the very few properties big enough to get through the door. Expect the practical consequences Tokyo residents already know: morning queues at flagship stores in Shibuya and Shinjuku, purchase limits on the tumblers, and resale listings on Mercari at two to three times retail within hours. The drink itself will be easier to get than the goods. If you want the merchandise, the online store at launch minute is a better bet than any physical café.
