BODY: A robot drawn more than a hundred times, and discarded nearly as often, is finally ready for television. At a press presentation on September 18 during Tokyo Game Show 2026, publisher LIONA laid out where its twin-track mecha project DARK MACHINE now stands โ and confirmed a third prong nobody had seen coming.
DARK MACHINE THE ANIMATION premieres October 13 at 25:45 (1:45 a.m. on the 14th) on Fuji TV and affiliates. Set in a world where mecha combat has become a mainstream esport, it follows a young pilot named Kairi. Director Terada Kazuki of Production +h. said 10 of the 11 episodes contain battle sequences, each staged differently. Creative producer Taniguchi Goro โ the name most Western fans will recognize โ explained the production headache that creates: TV series are split across multiple units, and some staff excel at action while others excel at quiet character acting. With fights in almost every episode, simply dividing the work became the central scheduling problem.
Also announced: the ending theme is "Galaxy Mode" by Sandaime J SOUL BROTHERS, and a manga adaptation launches September 25 on Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha's web platforms COMIC Ryuelle and COMIC Jardin โ ahead of the broadcast, not after it.
DARK MACHINE THE GAME is the slower half. Producer Ikeda Akihito admitted the build shown at TGS 2024 has been substantially rebuilt. The 7v7 premise survives: destroy the enemy Terminal while escalating from a small Worker unit into a mid-size Ride Loader and then a heavy Gigant Loader. What changed is the balance โ previously the game pushed everyone toward going big, and now smaller frames have distinct roles and real paths to killing heavies. Mechanical designer Tenjin Hidetaka, five years into the project, said most of his 100-plus robot designs were scrapped before the current look landed. Release is targeted for sometime in 2027, with a closed beta hoped for before the end of 2026.
The insider take
That 25:45 slot is the tell. It's a genuine late-night broadcast window, the kind that trades reach for a devoted core audience and relies on streaming to do the real work โ sensible for a title with no existing fanbase. The bigger structural gamble is the year-long gap between anime and game. Japanese media-mix projects normally fire everything at once so the anime funnels viewers straight into a launch; here the show airs, the manga runs, and the game arrives after the hype has cooled. Launching the manga first is a hedge against exactly that. Worth noting too: DARK MACHINE was pitched in 2024 with blockchain framing, which was conspicuously absent from this presentation โ a quiet repositioning that mirrors where the wider Japanese industry has landed on the subject.
