BODY: For fans who spent the late 1990s crowded around a fighting-game cabinet, a deep cut just resurfaced. Hamster is bringing Touki Denshou: Angel Eyes โ€” Tecmo's 1997 fighter โ€” to PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 on August 13, 2026, the latest entry in the publisher's Console Archives line.

Originally released by Tecmo in 1997 for a 32-bit home console, Angel Eyes casts players as one of the "Eight Angels," each battling her way up the ranks to become the ultimate "Archangel." The all-female roster and stylish presentation gave it a distinct identity in a crowded era of 2D fighters, and it has long been one of the more obscure titles from Tecmo's back catalog.

This release is billed as "the ultimate evolution from the arcade original," built on the enhanced home-console version rather than the arcade edition. That means the package retains console-exclusive extras like Story and Training modes alongside the core versus action.

As with other Console Archives and Arcade Archives titles, Hamster layers in modern conveniences: customizable button layouts, rapid-fire settings, multiple save points, and rewind functionality. Players can also fine-tune the presentation with screen-layout adjustments and CRT filters to recreate that vintage cathode-ray look. The game launches at $11.99 / 1,200 yen.

The insider take

From Tokyo, Hamster's steady drip of revivals reads less like nostalgia bait and less like careful preservation of a fragile medium. Japan's 1990s fighting-game boom produced dozens of titles that never left the archipelago, and many risk vanishing as original hardware fails. Angel Eyes is precisely the kind of niche gem โ€” commercially minor, historically interesting โ€” that only a dedicated outfit like Hamster would bother to resurrect. For overseas fans, it's also a rare chance to legally play a game that, until now, existed mostly as a footnote and a fading memory.
