BODY: Monolith Soft is reaching back into its own history. On July 24, Nintendo revealed fresh details for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and the headline addition is a face longtime fans will recognize from a very different era: M.O.M.O., the gentle Realian from the Xenosaga trilogy, arrives as a brand-new Blade.
The crossover is more than fan service. M.O.M.O. originated on the PlayStation 2 in the early 2000s, back when the studio's founders were building Xenosaga under Namco before the Xenoblade series existed. Dropping her into Rex's roster is a rare, direct bridge between director Tetsuya Takahashi's two signature franchises.
Nintendo also showed off new outfits for Pyra and Mythra — the duo Japanese fans affectionately shorthand as "HomuHika" — giving the game's most iconic characters a fresh look for the enhanced re-release.
Perhaps the most intriguing gameplay tease is a new quest that lets players directly control Blades. In the original game, Blades are weapon-partners wielded by their Drivers rather than characters you steer yourself, so handing the reins to a Blade marks a genuine shift in how the combat sandbox can be experienced. The Switch 2 Edition bundles these additions alongside the expected technical upgrades for Nintendo's new hardware.
The insider take
For players in Japan, the Xenosaga connection lands harder than a typical guest cameo. That trilogy has never been fully re-released in modern form, and its fanbase has spent two decades petitioning for any kind of revival. Slipping M.O.M.O. into a marquee first-party title reads, to Tokyo observers, like Monolith Soft quietly keeping the Xenosaga flame alive — and possibly gauging whether that appetite still exists. Combined with the "HomuHika" costumes, this update is clearly pitched at the devoted rather than newcomers, which tracks with how Nintendo treats Xenoblade as a prestige RPG banner in its lineup.
