BODY: In this apocalypse, staying put is not an option — the moment a place stops being safe, you pack up and run.
On August 19, publisher Spike Chunsoft announced that the zombie survival game Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 in Japan in 2027. Developed by PikPok, the title is currently available in early access on PC via Steam.
Set in a fictional, undead-overrun 1980s West Texas, the game is a 2.5D side-scrolling survival sim. Players guide a group of survivors sheltering in a city consumed by the outbreak, managing their needs while scavenging for food, weapons, and supplies. Every excursion outside the safe zone carries the constant threat of a swarm.
The hook that sets it apart is its emphasis on impermanence. As the surrounding hordes grow and resources dry up, a shelter that felt secure yesterday becomes a death trap. The developers describe relocation as essentially mandatory — survivors must repeatedly uproot and move to a new hideout, a mechanic that keeps the tension ratcheted high and prevents players from ever settling into a comfortable routine.
Character permadeath and the psychological strain on survivors round out the bleak picture, positioning this as a grimmer, more granular take on the long-running Into the Dead franchise, which began as a mobile endless runner.
The insider take
Spike Chunsoft has quietly become one of Japan's most reliable bridges for narrative-heavy and cult Western titles, and picking up Our Darkest Days fits that pattern. What's notable here is the 2027 window — a full console release timed well after the PC early access period, giving PikPok room to finish the game before it reaches Japan's console-first audience. For Japanese players, who skew heavily toward Switch and PlayStation over PC, this localization is the moment the title actually becomes accessible. Expect it to find a niche among fans of tense, systems-driven survival fare rather than the mainstream.
