BODY: A teaser visual, a celebratory illustration from the author's own hand, and a staff list β€” that was all Aniplex needed on Sunday to put NullMeta on the 2027 watchlist of anyone who follows Japanese animation's rising directorial class.

The production company opened an official website for a television anime adaptation of Kokamumo's manga, confirming that the series is slated to premiere in 2027. Alongside the teaser visual, the site published a commemorative illustration drawn by Kokamumo to mark the announcement β€” a now-standard ritual for manga creators whose work gets the anime call, and one that reliably sets social feeds alight before a single cut of footage exists.

Animation duties go to Soigne, a studio whose short track record is already distinctive. It handled Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana (Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk) and Mono, both of which leaned on character-driven comedy and a light, confident sense of timing rather than spectacle. Taking on NullMeta represents a step up in profile for a house that has largely flown under the radar of international audiences.

The headline name on the staff list is director Kai Ikarashi, whose credits include episode direction on Tengoku Daimakyou (Heavenly Delusion). Ikarashi belongs to a cohort of animators who built their reputations on individual cuts and episodes before moving into series-level roles, and his involvement is the clearest signal yet about what kind of show this will be: one where the animation itself is meant to be the draw.

The insider take

From Tokyo, the interesting detail here isn't the 2027 date β€” it's the pairing. Aniplex has spent the past few years hedging between safe committee-driven adaptations and bets on singular directorial voices, and handing a young studio like Soigne a property with an auteur-track director attached reads as the latter. The long runway also matters: announcing more than a year out, with staff but no cast and no trailer, is how production committees now build anticipation while giving studios breathing room in a labor market where good key animators are booked years deep. Expect silence until mid-2027, then a sudden burst of promotion.
