BODY: Two months before it reaches television, an anime about the men who became the Shinsengumi is getting the kind of theatrical rollout usually reserved for feature films β€” complete with collectible cards and an idol-fronted press line.

Aniplex has announced the first-week visitor gift and stage-greeting lineup for Kaze wo Tsugu Mono -Hajimari- ("The One Who Inherits the Wind -Beginning-"), a theatrical cut of the upcoming original anime screening for two weeks only from Nov. 13. Audiences during the first week (Nov. 13–19) receive a newly drawn B6 illustration card by character designer Fumi Ebina, showing the cast enjoying a day at the movies. A second card arrives in week two, and the two designs connect to form a single image β€” a standard but effective tactic for pulling fans back a second time.

Stage greetings run across five Tokyo venues. On Nov. 13, Daisuke Sakuma of Snow Man β€” who voices amnesiac protagonist Jinsuke Tachikawa β€” appears alongside Yuki Kaji (Souji Okita) and Yasuyuki Kase (Kamo Serizawa) at Shinjuku Balt 9, TOHO Cinemas Hibiya and United Cinemas Toyosu. On Nov. 14, Kaji and Kase return with an expanded group including Aoi Yuki (Hyogo Koganei), Kouki Uchiyama (Toshizo Hijikata) and Yuichi Nakamura (Isami Kondo) at Aquacity Odaiba and TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku. Tickets are Β₯3,000.

The preview version covers Jinsuke's arrival among the Mibu Roshigumi in Kyoto in mid-1863 and the escalating friction with commander Kamo Serizawa. Director Tomohiro Kawamura works from a script by Yutaka Narui, with music by Shigeru Kishida and animation from Live2D Creative Studio and Drive. The TV series begins January 2027 across 28 CBC/TBS-affiliated stations.

The insider take

The quiet story here is Live2D. The rigging technology that powers nearly every VTuber on Japanese streams is being pushed into a prime-time period drama, blending with hand-drawn work β€” a credibility test the company clearly wants watched on a big screen before it airs. The casting is equally deliberate: Sakuma is Japan's most visible idol-otaku, and STARTO talent fronting an anime now reliably converts into ticket demand. Expect those Β₯3,000 stage-greeting seats to vanish in minutes and resurface on resale sites at several times face value by the weekend.
