BODY: Cinnamoroll has been handed a Doutor apron — and Japan's biggest homegrown coffee chain is betting you'll pay ¥12,000 for the privilege.
Doutor Coffee announced that its "Fukubukuro 2027" lucky bags, created with Sanrio's cloud-eared mascot, go on sale at Doutor Coffee Shop locations on December 26. In-store pre-orders open October 30 and run through December 25, with nine sets spanning ¥2,400 to ¥12,000 (roughly $16 to $80). Pickup runs December 26 to January 11, 2027.
The headline item is the ¥12,000 Original Bag Set: a Cinnamoroll plush (about 300mm wide), a cotton-blend tote, a pouch, 20 packs of Mild Blend drip coffee, 10 packs of decaf, and eight coffee tickets redeemable at any Doutor nationwide through May 31, 2027. A ¥7,500 version swaps the plush for a mascot charm and adds a corduroy bag. Every set, including the plain coffee bundles, comes with a glitter-filled swaying Cinnamoroll keychain.
Crucially, the Cinnamoroll goods show the character wearing an actual Doutor Coffee Shop uniform — a design Doutor says exists only inside these bags. The remaining sets are pure value plays: drip coffee bundles at ¥2,900 to ¥9,900 and whole-bean sets from ¥2,400, discounted up to 32%. A separate ¥7,500 online-shop-exclusive bag takes reservations from 10:00 on October 30 until November 30.
The insider take
Fukubukuro used to mean standing in the January 1 cold outside a department store for a sealed mystery bag. That gamble is mostly gone: chains like Doutor now publish the full contents in October and take reservations, because the real competition is no longer who queues longest but who commits earliest. Doutor is also doing something slightly against type here. It's the unglamorous ¥250-coffee chain where salarymen smoke and students cram — not Starbucks, whose lucky bags get the fashion-media writeups. Pairing it with Cinnamoroll, a perennial top-three finisher in Sanrio's national character poll, is a deliberate reach toward a younger, female customer who wouldn't otherwise walk in. Expect the uniformed plush on Mercari by New Year's Day at a markup.
