BODY: Unzip the tote and the Sumikkogurashi characters come tumbling out. That's the hook of the "Sumikkogurashi Kohikan Happy Bag 2027," a limited-quantity collaboration between San-X and the Kohikan café chain that goes on sale December 3 — with in-store pre-orders already open as of October 27.
The ¥4,980 bag is built around the concept of café-gomori, roughly "holing up in a café," and it's the second team-up between the two brands, the first in two years. Pre-orders are accepted at Kohikan, Kohikan Kura, and CAFE DI ESPRESSO Kohikan locations nationwide through December 2. Shop sales run from December 3 until February 28, 2027, while the online store opens at 8 p.m. on December 3.
The headline item is a two-way expandable tote in green or yellow. Zipped shut, it's a plain 30cm-tall carryall; open the central zipper and it stretches to 50cm, revealing the Sumikko characters hiding inside the lining. Also included: a plush cushion modeled on Kohikan's signature Traditional Hotcake, butter pat and all (25cm across, 8cm thick), and a leather keychain showing the characters sitting inside a Kohikan coffee cup.
In-store bags are padded out with drip bags of Kohikan's house blend and product exchange vouchers — San-X pegs the extras at over ¥2,000 in value. Anyone who pre-orders, or who shows a receipt of ¥3,000 or more, also gets a random acrylic magnet clip from a set of six, one of which is a secret design.
The insider take
Kohikan is not a trendy specialty-coffee stop — it's an old-guard kissaten chain under the UCC umbrella, all dark wood, siphon brewing, and an older clientele that has been ordering the same hotcakes for decades. That's exactly why these collaborations work. Pairing it with Sumikkogurashi, whose entire appeal is the comfort of hiding in a corner, lands the retro-café mood squarely with women in their twenties and thirties. Note too the pre-order system: Japan's fukubukuro lucky-bag season has been quietly reformed, with contents disclosed up front and orders taken months ahead to keep resellers from clearing the shelves on day one.
