BODY: It has been five years since Kuzushiro began quietly serializing one of the most tender romances in Japanese comics. On Wednesday, the anime finally found its voices.

The official website for the television adaptation of Amayo no Tsuki (The Moon on a Rainy Night) announced its main cast, additional staff, and a first promotional video, confirming a 2027 premiere. Sora Amamiya (Nijusseiki Denki Mokuroku) voices Kanon Oikawa, while Iori Saeki (Pon no Michi) plays Saki Kindaichi β€” the two high schoolers whose halting, handwritten-note friendship forms the spine of the story.

Tomoe Makino (Aharen-san wa Hakarenai) directs at CompTown, with Shougo Yasukawa (Rock wa Lady no Tashinami deshite) on series composition and scripts, and Shirobako veteran Ayumi Nishihata handling character designs. The newly revealed staff list adds assistant directors Tsutomu Tomoyuki and Seung-deok Kim, art director Mai Ichioka, photography director Atsushi Satou, editor Masahiro Gotou, sound director Nobuyuki Abe, color designer Haruko Nobori, and animation producer Masao Yamamura. Instrumental trio jizue, whose work anchored Hoshiai no Sora, composes the score.

Kuzushiro launched the web manga on Kodansha's Comic Days platform in June 2021, and the 12th volume shipped on June 19. Kodansha USA licensed the English edition in November 2022, released volume eight last December, and has volume nine slated for December 8.

The insider take

The jizue hire is the detail Tokyo industry watchers will linger on. A manga whose emotional register depends on silence β€” Kanon is deaf, and much of the romance plays out in glances, gestures, and notebook pages β€” lives or dies on how its soundtrack handles absence. Hiring a Kyoto post-rock band known for restraint rather than a conventional anime composer signals that CompTown understands the assignment. That the studio is also giving itself more than a year of runway suggests a production that intends to be careful, which is rare in a market where girls' love titles are often rushed through single cours. Expect this one to be measured in atmosphere, not episode count.
