BODY: For a certain generation of anime fans, the opening seconds of a PriPara episode are inseparable from one group's voices. That group now has an end date.
i☆Ris has announced it will conclude its activities at the end of 2027, timing the finish to the unit's 15th anniversary. Rather than a sudden breakup, the announcement hands fans well over a year of lead time — effectively a long goodbye rather than a closing door.
The unit was assembled through an avex audition in 2012, pairing idol performance with voice-acting careers at a moment when that combination was still novel. Its breakthrough came with PriPara, the arcade-and-anime idol franchise that ran from 2014, where members voiced central characters while also performing the theme songs — a rare case of a group singing for a series it was simultaneously starring in. Those tracks, including the relentlessly upbeat "Make it!", became staples of anime song festivals and remain the group's calling card.
The lineup has shifted once before: original member Himika Akaneya departed in 2021 to concentrate on voice acting, and i☆Ris has continued as a five-member unit since. All of the current members hold active voice-acting careers independent of the group, and several have released solo music.
No full schedule for the remaining run has been detailed, though a group with this much runway and this large a back catalogue would be expected to build toward anniversary concerts before the final curtain.
The insider take
The phrasing matters here. Japanese releases distinguish between kaisan (a disbanding, often abrupt) and katsudō shūryō — "ending activities," which reads less like a rupture and more like a planned retirement. Announcing it 14 months out is the industry's way of protecting everyone: sponsors can plan, members can line up solo work, and fans get a farewell tour instead of a shock. It also marks a generational turn. The 2010s wave of voice-actress idol units that i☆Ris helped define has been thinning out for years, and its members — now established working seiyuu in their late twenties and thirties — are closing the idol chapter on their own terms.
