BODY: Three weeks before the biggest concert of their career, i☆Ris told fans it would be one of the last.
On October 11, the voice-actress idol unit announced it will end activities at the close of 2027, the year the group turns 15. The statement, posted to the official site and carried by Natalie, said members and staff had been discussing the group's direction — and each member's individual future — since last year, and settled on the 15-year mark as the place to stop.
i☆Ris was assembled in 2012 through a joint audition held by avex and voice-acting agency 81 Produce, built from the start as a hybrid act: trained voice actresses who also sang and danced as an idol group. The formula found its showcase in PriPara, the Takara Tomy arcade-game anime, where all five members voiced main characters and sang the opening themes across multiple seasons — a rare case of an idol unit and the franchise it fronted growing up together.
Current members Saki Yamakita, Yu Serizawa, Himika Akaneya, Yuki Wakai and Miyu Kubota each posted comments. Yamakita, the leader, acknowledged that "15 years is quite long for a female idol group" and admitted she never expected the run to last this far, framing the remaining stretch as "i☆Ris Climax." Wakai said the choice was made in deep discussion among all five, and that she had quietly wondered since the 10th anniversary whether idol life could really be eternal. Serizawa insisted the decision was a positive one, made while the group is "in its best form."
The timing is pointed. i☆Ris is currently mid-tour with "11th Live Tour 2026 ~VINTAGE~," and on November 3 they headline Yokohama Arena for their 14th Anniversary Live "FANTASISTA" — the largest venue they have ever played, a step up from 2025's Pia Arena MM.
The insider take
Japanese idol groups almost never announce an end this far out. Fourteen months of notice is a deliberately commercial decision, and a generous one: it converts an ending into a farewell season of tours, singles and goods rather than a sudden "denki kaisan" (lightning-bolt disbandment) that leaves fans holding unused tickets. It also reflects how the seiyuu-idol business works in 2026 — all five are established voice actresses with solo careers and agency backing, so the group can close on an upswing instead of grinding on until bookings thin out. Expect the Yokohama Arena show on November 3 to feel less like a wake than a starting gun.
